Bonners Church of England Primary School & Nursery

Extreme Weather Procedure

At Bonners Church of England Primary & Nursery, we want to keep children safe during extreme weather. This procedure explains how we will communicate with parents and what to do if conditions such as heavy snow, ice, high winds, flooding, or very hot weather affect travel, site access, or the school day.

In the event of extreme weather, we will make decisions as early as possible and update parents using our usual communication channels. Please ensure we have up-to-date contact details. If it is unsafe for children to travel, the school may delay opening or close. Parents should not assume the school will be open unless they have received an official update.

If you are told to keep your child at home, please follow the guidance provided in our message and ensure your child is supervised. If the school is open, children should come prepared for the conditions, including appropriate clothing and footwear. If severe weather develops during the day, we will follow our safety procedures and keep parents informed as soon as possible regarding collection arrangements.

Amber Heat-Health Alert – Extreme Weather Procedures
Following the AMBER Heat-Health Alert, we will continue to implement our extreme hot weather procedures to help keep all pupils and staff safe during the hot weather.
Sun Protection
  • Please apply sunscreen to your child before they come to school each morning.
  • Children should bring a named sun hat to wear during outdoor activities.
  • If your child brings sunscreen into school, it must be clearly named and for their own use only. Sunscreen must not be shared.
  • Staff will remind pupils regularly about staying safe in the sun and encourage sensible sun safety practices.
Shade
  • Pupils and staff will be encouraged to use shaded areas whenever possible.
  • Where appropriate, outdoor activities will take place in shaded locations, and we will make full use of all available shaded spaces around the school including the use of additional gazebos.
Hydration
  • Fresh drinking water is available throughout the school day and we will have additional water stations for sporting events.
  • Pupils will be reminded to drink water regularly and refill their water bottles.
  • Additional opportunities for water and toilet breaks will be provided as needed.
Outdoor Activities
  • Outdoor sports and physical activities will be carefully monitored throughout the week.
  • Activities may be adapted, reduced or rescheduled where necessary in response to the temperature to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff.
Managing Indoor Temperatures
To help keep classrooms as cool and comfortable as possible, we will continue to:
  • Open windows early in the day, where possible, to improve airflow.
  • Use blinds and other shading to reduce direct sunlight and heat.
  • Use fans in classrooms to improve air circulation.
Thank you for your support in helping us keep everyone safe during this period of hot weather. We will continue to monitor the situation and follow the latest public health guidance and keep our school community informed.
